O'Neil was a participant in O'Neil took part in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005, when he was still in highschool. The quality of her singing impressed panel of judges and she received a promotion to an audition in the 100th place. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges but suffered substantial losses during the Top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals as she fell into the lowest 3 and 2 spots respectively. The judges were stunned by this and advised the viewers to choose contestants similar to Melissa with the best singing abilities. O'Neil did not make it to the top 3 after a series of consistently outstanding performances. After two more breathtaking performances on the 7th of September 2005, the day that O'Neil and Rex Goudie were able to make it into the final two, judge Werner reportedly predicted that the newspapers in the early morning were going to read O'Neil defeated Goudie in order to be the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and also the youngest winner of the show's record . O'Neil received a phone call from Canadian Premier Paul Martin congratulating her on winning Canadian Idol immediately.
